Columns
|
There were three types of columns. There were the Doric, Ionic, and the Corinthian. The Doric style had a flat, round top. The ionic had a curl on each side. This represented a womans hair. The corinthian style had leaves patterned all around it. This represented the leaves of the forest or olive leaves. The olive leaves ment peace.

Porch of Maidens, Erechtheum
The Erechtheum is an Ionic temple built from 421 to 405 BC as part of the Acropolis in Athens. The small porch on the temple's south end, known as the Porch of the Maidens, features six caryatids holding up an Ionic entablature. The elaborate ornaments of this building contrast dramatically with the Parthenon's Doric formality. (The Parthenon is also part of the Acropolis.) The temple was named for Erechtheus, a mythical Athenian hero. The building's site is supposed to be the place where the Greek gods Athena and Poseidon contested the right for dominion over Athens.
